An over-wintering and passage migrant, Black-tailed Godwits can be found throughout Portugal, though their preferred habitat is coastal estuaries and mud-flats. Their winter plumage is an unstreaked grey, but when breeding their neck and chest become reddish-orange, brighter in the male than the female. The belly remains white with lateral streaking. The long bill has an orange base with a black tip throughout the year. A white wing bar is noticeable in flight and the species can gather in impressive numbers on the rice paddies that are a feature of the west coast.
