Coal Tit (Periparus ater) Chapim-preto

Coal Tits are an enigma. They are resident and common throughout the north of the country but seem to have a holy fear of crossing the Tagus. On the northern shore they can be found easily right up to the shoreline and yet I have never found a single one south of the river, and this is the same story the length of the river in Portugal, though in Spain they are found on the south eastern coast and are resident in northern Africa also.

Where's an undergraduate wanting a research subject? I would welcome any update or knowledge from anyone concerning this anomaly.
