Mediterranean Gull (Larus melanocephalus)

An over-wintering species only found on the coast, this gull looks very similar to Black-headeds, but there are significant differences that can distinguish one from the other in the field. For a start, when adult Mediterranean Gulls have a black stripe towards the end of its stouter bill as opposed to a black tip itself, and when juvenile its legs are dark as opposed to the always red legs of the Black-headeds.The head in the adult is black, (as opposed to the dark chocolate of the Black-headeds), and has a dark mask as opposed to the prominent black ear.
