The Great Black-backed Gull is strictly a winter visitor and comparatively rare this far south down the Atlantic seaboard. It is the largest gull that visits our shores and is unmistakeable, being roughly the size of a Red Kite or a Short-toed Eagle, and, as the name suggests, an appreciably darker back and upper-wing surface than its smaller cousin, the Lesser Black-backed Gull.
