The White Wagtail is a resident species and one that is difficult to mistake for any other as it does what it says on the lid, i.e. it's white-ish and wags its tail. It likes to breed in the vicinity of water, is not shy of Man, and frequently stakes out a territory for itself around a compost heap, thus ensuring a ready supply of insects upon which it feeds. With its stiff jerky gait it rushes here and there on warm sunny days across lawns catching insects, constantly bobbing its tail.
In winter there is often an influx of birds from Eastern Europe to escape the harsh inner-continental winter and thus many birds one sees at this time of year have varying degrees of black on their chin and chest.
