One of my favourite LBJs and with an appealing call that sounds like a four year old in the supermarket queue on being told that, no, it can't have any sweets, a descending "wahhh, wahhh, wahhh, wahhh, wahhh". It is also appealing as it looks for all the world as if its just had a "short back'n'sides" with the supercilia continuing behind the head to meet low on the nape. A small flat crest is sometimes raised.
In flight it almost appears to have no tail at all. Woodlarks are very often found in pairs on the side of stony tracks and will ascend at the last moment. Repeatedly returns to exactly the same spot, so once found can be re-found on subsequent days, thus generating superb views as they rely on camouflage for protection until approached very close.
