(Common) Linnet (Carduelis cannabina)

Resident and common throughout the country, one will seldom find a Linnet on its own - in fact I can't remember a single instance, apart from individuals calling as the fly overhead, but in these circumstances one is never sure as to whether there isn't another one around nearby. The male's breeding plumage is obvious with a red waistcoat and forehead, but in the winter he's a good deal more subdued and loses his forehead, while the female's subtle shades of lilac can sometimes have one wondering for a second or two. Their call however is distinctive.

They prefer open grassland and, this being so, can often be found on the Plains or any other open area.
