Ortolan Bunting (Emberiza hortulana)

Ortolan Buntings are a passage migrant through much of the country, only recorded as breeding in the far north east. At first glance they have distinct similarities to Corn Buntings, especially in winter plumage when the pink chest and yellow moustachial stripe are dull.

Forages in small flocks in short grass, but sometimes in gardens, hence its scientific name, deriving from "hortulanus", Latin for gardener.
