A breeding species in the north of the country, in the south the European Honey Buzzard is only seen on migration, wintering in Africa south of the Sahara. It feeds on small birds, reptiles and amphibians as well as the larvae in wasps' nests. It never eats the entire nest but rather remembers its location and returns later once the wasps have rebuilt and raised more larvae.
