Spotted Redshank (Tringa erythropus) Perna-vermelha-escuro

A coastal over-wintering species in Portugal and told apart from its commoner cousin the Common Redshank by a much longer bill, mostly black with a red base to the lower half, and a white cigar along the back instead of an open ended wedge. In winter plumage the belly of the Spotted Redshank is unmarked and white as opposed to the subtle mottling of the Common, and this is what we usually find in Portugal, mainly in late March. Late migrators can occasionally be found and these birds look completely different, with black legs and a near total black plumage.
