A much larger and heavier bird than its cousin the Iberian (latterly "Azure-winged") Magpie, the Common Magpie is resident throughout Portugal but relatively uncommon in the southern half of the country, though since the turn of the century, in common with the trend in northern Europe, I have noticed a marked increase in both numbers and distribution.
Sexes are similar and the bird is relatively unafraid of Man and easily approached and observed.
